Meet Up with Minister of Foreign Affairs

I think Masami Ito at The Japan Times will explain this way better than me; excerpts from the original article:

Foreign Minister Koichiro Genba met with members of all-girl idol group AKB48 on Thursday and thanked them for taking part in a campaign to attract Chinese tourists and dispel harmful rumors about the safety of Japanese food products.

During his meeting with three of AKB48’s members — Tomomi Itano, Rie Kitahara and Yui Yokoyama — Genba, a Fukushima native, expressed his gratitude for the group’s support of disaster-hit areas in the northeast and said he hoped its participation in the campaign will help deepen ties with China.

AKB48 were approached to be official campaign supporters because “it is a vigorous group that currently represents Japan . . . and is popular in China as well,” the Foreign Ministry said, noting that its members have actively supported disaster victims in Tohoku by making large donations and monthly visits to the region.

At the meeting, AKB48’s Itano talked with Genba about the visits group members have been making to devastated areas in Tohoku: “We go there hoping to cheer people up. But by the time we return, we are the ones filled with smiles and energy. We hope we can continue energizing the people in disaster-hit areas, as well as throughout Japan.”

The exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong will promote various tourist spots in Japan, exhibit and sell Japanese products and have Japanese food-tasting corners to counter rumors about their safety following the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

It is confirmed from other sources that AKB48 will be making their appearance (and most probably perform) in Beijing from the 17-18th, in Shanghai on the 26th and Hong Kong from the 26-27th of March. The list of girls that will be going for this is unknown at the moment, but according to a Chinese fan report who went to the handshaking event today in Japan, tomochin personally replied that there are no plans to travel to China at the moment when asked if she will be going to China recently.

More AKB48 X HottoMotto

As always, marketing campaigns do not stop at CMs alone, so, HottoMotto has released a whole lot of miscellaneous products and downloadable content which are not necessarily related to the product the girls endorsed. So, after releasing a series of downloadable desktop wallpaper which are not that well photoshopped, the company has released a few more things. Starting on the 1st of February, there is a lucky draw (with some purchase I presume) and you get a chance to win the following: A. mobile strap, B. notebook and C. mobile screensaver.
